filos (friend) + xenia (hospitality) = filoxenia xenos (stranger) + phobia (fear) = xenophobia
We took part in an artistic intervention and a symposium (Polis 21), on the themes of public space and public security that took place in Monastiraki square at the centre of Athens. The concepts of filoxenia and xenophobia originate from Greece and although they date back to Homer’s time they are fundamental to current contemporary societies, amongst which is their birthplace, Athens.
The series of four posters consist of the parts that make up the words in order to create one image while allow for multiple meanings when posted in random order. The project was funded by the European Cultural Foundation and was organised by the European Alternatives in collaboration with SARCHA (School of ARCHitecture for All) and the Nomadic Architecture Network. www.euroalter.comwww.sarcha.grwww.nomadikiarxitektoniki.net
